The Wife Who Never Slept
For eleven years, Mark believed his wife, Laura, had terrible insomnia. Every night she stayed awake until morning, sitting beside the bedroom window and staring outside. Doctors couldn't explain it. Sleeping tablets didn't work. One night, Mark secretly stayed awake with her. At exactly 3:06 a.m., Laura stood up and walked downstairs. Mark followed silently. She opened the back door and stepped into the garden. Then she stopped beside an old oak tree. “You can come out now,” she whispered. Mark expected someone to appear. Instead, Laura turned around and looked directly at him. “You weren't supposed to follow me.” Mark asked what she was doing. Laura pointed toward the tree. “Every night, he comes back.” Mark looked at the ground and noticed dozens of footprints leading from the tree to their house. “Who?” he whispered. Laura's eyes filled with tears. “My husband.” Mark stared at her. “I'm your husband.” Laura shook her head. “Not anymore.” Then something moved behind the tree. Mark saw his own face staring back at him.
