Daniel thought he knew everything about his wife, Claire, until she began telling him things about his childhood that he had never shared with anyone. One night, she casually described his old childhood bedroom—including a hidden door behind the wardrobe. Daniel froze. That house had been demolished almost twenty years ago.
Then Claire began waking at exactly 3:17 a.m., whispering names Daniel didn't recognize. One night, he found an old photograph from his childhood. In it, young Daniel stood outside his old house—and behind him was a girl he had never seen before.
Claire looked at the photograph and suddenly began crying.
“I remember her,” she whispered.
That night, Daniel heard Claire speaking to someone in the hallway. When he asked who she was talking to, she slowly turned around and answered in a voice that wasn't hers:
“The boy who died in that house.”
The next morning, Daniel searched through old newspaper archives. He discovered an article about a child who had disappeared from his childhood home twenty-three years earlier.
The child's name was Daniel.
Daniel stared at the newspaper, unable to breathe.
His wife hadn't somehow learned about his childhood.
She had been there.
