The Voice on the Baby Monitor
Emily bought an old house in the countryside because she wanted somewhere quiet.
The previous owners had left several things behind, including an old baby monitor.
She had no children, so she put it inside a cupboard and forgot about it.
Three nights later, Emily woke up to static.
She followed the sound into the hallway.
The baby monitor was switched on.
A woman's voice whispered through the speaker.
“He's awake.”
Emily immediately unplugged it.
The voice continued.
“Emily…”
She froze.
The monitor was no longer connected to anything.
Then the voice whispered:
“He's standing behind you.”
Emily slowly turned around.
The hallway was empty.
She grabbed the monitor and threw it into the cupboard.
A few seconds later, something knocked from inside.
Then she heard a child's voice.
“Why did you leave me here?”
The next morning, Emily contacted the previous owner.
There was a long silence.
Finally, the woman said:
“We never had a baby.”
