My Wife Keeps Setting the Table for Three
Every evening, Claire prepared dinner for herself and her husband William.
But she always placed three plates on the table.
William thought it was strange.
“Why do you keep doing that?”
Claire would simply remove the third plate.
One night, William came home early.
Claire was already sitting at the table.
Three plates were prepared.
Three glasses.
Three chairs.
And Claire was speaking to someone.
William entered the dining room.
“Who are you talking to?”
Claire stared at him.
Then she looked at the empty chair.
“He's here.”
William laughed nervously.
“Who's here?”
Claire's face became pale.
“Our son.”
William stopped breathing.
They had never had children.
Claire slowly pointed to the third chair.
William saw nothing.
Then the chair moved.
Just slightly.
That night, William searched through old family documents.
He found a photograph of Claire as a young woman.
She was standing beside a little boy.
On the back was written:
William — age 6.
He stared at the photograph.
The little boy had his face.
From the dining room came Claire's voice.
“William?”
Then a child's voice answered:
“Dad's finally remembered us.”
