THE INTERVIEW
James thought he had finally found the opportunity of his life.
The company offered him a salary almost ten times higher than his current job.
The interview location was strange.
There was no company name on the building.
No receptionist.
No windows.
Just an elevator leading underground.
Three people waited inside the interview room.
The first question was normal.
“What are your qualifications?”
The second was strange.
“Have you ever betrayed someone who trusted you?”
The third made him uncomfortable.
“Have you ever secretly wished someone would die?”
James laughed nervously.
The interviewer didn't.
The questions became increasingly personal.
They knew about his failed marriage.
His debts.
His affair.
The secret he had never told anyone.
Finally, the interviewer placed a folder on the table.
Inside were photographs of five people.
“Which one would you kill if your life depended on it?”
James stood up.
“I think this interview is over.”
The interviewer smiled.
“Sit down.”
James looked toward the door.
It was locked.
Then the interviewer showed him the final photograph.
It was James.
But the photograph had been taken inside that room.
From behind him.
James slowly turned around.
Nobody was there.
The interviewer leaned forward.
“We're not hiring you.”
He opened another file.
“We're replacing you.”
