A 13th-century monastery was built over the ruins of an older royal palace. According to local records, the monks were forbidden from entering one particular underground chamber. The reason was never written down. In 1891, three researchers discovered the chamber and found a stone throne surrounded by dozens of human-sized statues. That night, the monastery's bell began ringing by itself. One monk claimed he saw the statues standing in different positions every time he looked at them. By morning, the researchers were gone. Only their notebooks remained—and on the final page, written in trembling handwriting, were the words: “The statues are not statues. They are the monks who came before us.”
