I was staying in a small hotel for work when I noticed the room across from mine had been empty since I arrived. One night, around 1:20 a.m., I heard someone unlock the door. I looked through my peephole and saw a man enter carrying a black duffel bag. Nothing about him seemed unusual, but about ten minutes later I heard what sounded like furniture being dragged across the floor. I called reception and asked if someone had checked into that room. The receptionist paused and said, “No, sir. That room is vacant.” A few minutes later, I heard the door open again, but when I looked through the peephole, the hallway was empty. The next morning, I asked the receptionist about it. She checked the security footage and confirmed that a man had entered the room—but there was no footage of him ever leaving. Then she showed me something else. The room had been searched by police two months earlier after a previous guest disappeared from it. They never found him. That night, I returned to my room and found a black duffel bag sitting outside my door. I hadn't seen it before. I didn't touch it. I called the police instead. When they arrived, one officer opened the bag and immediately stepped back. Inside was a copy of my passport, my hotel reservation, and a photograph of me sleeping.
