THE TWO MEN AT THE GAS STATION

It was around 2 a.m. when I stopped at an almost empty gas station and noticed two Black men sitting silently inside an old SUV. They weren't buying anything or talking—they just kept watching the entrance. Then I heard tap… tap… tap coming from the trunk. I looked closer and saw it move slightly. One of the men stepped out and asked, “Can you help us?” Before I could answer, a little girl's voice came from inside the trunk: “Please…” I backed away and ran into the gas station. When the police arrived, the men were gone, but the SUV was still there. They opened the trunk and found nothing except a small pink backpack. The cashier recognized it immediately—it belonged to a little girl who had disappeared six months earlier. The next morning, I received a photograph from an unknown number. It showed me standing outside the gas station that night… and behind the SUV was the little girl holding her backpack. Under the picture were the words: “You heard me. Why didn't you open it?” The police checked the SUV's records and discovered something impossible: the vehicle had been sitting in an impound yard for eight months.
